Adobe After effects. Have got 2 layers doing the monster morph and its only showing me inside mask. Help me?

Well i am doing this tutorial for the demon face warp on adobe after effects. The guy in the videos mask is up around the object and still showing the background and the color changes inside the mask. On my screen when i completed the mask it made the rest of the screen black, the color changes are still happening inside the mask like they are supposed to but i want the rest of the screen up to compare. Can anyone help me. Im quite new to this program and just watching tutorial after tutorial and so far i havnt found a way to get the black away.....Am using 217 version i think.....If that means anything to anyone :P
