Yes, the Elizabethans would have considered a masquerade a totally appropriate birthday celebration. Costumed balls began in 15th-century Italy and were first associated with the Venetian Carnival. From Italy, they spread to the rest of Europe.
Masques, an elaborate form of entertaining featuring music, dancing, singing, dancing and above all staging with scenery and elaborate costumes, developed from these celebrations.
Edgar Allen Poe wrote about a macabre masked ball in the short story ';The Masque of the Red Death';, and a masked ball figured prominently in the plot of Hermann Hesse's ';Steppenwolf';. I don't know what your definition of masked ball is, but at the court of Henry VIII, he and his mates would get dressed up as pirates or Indians and ';invade'; the ladies' rooms, to the unexpected(yeah, right)horror of the ladies.
As well, masked people danced in a cross between ballet and theatre, called a masque, and took off disguises at midnight, to everyone's unexpected(yeah, right)surprise. This was common right through the 15th and 16th centuries in England.
Birthday celebrations were quite low-key, the big day of the year was your saint's day, until Edward VI abolished the saints when he became a puritan king.(he was only 10 at the time).
In Europe, especially France and Italy, masking was much moire common, but I'm no expert on those customs.

Does anyone have any ideas for a Halloween, 1700s era masked ball? (LOW budget!)?
My friends and i have about 20 people (a few of them boys that are not exactly friends, more like guys our guy friends know we are trying to impress) coming to my house for a party where you must wear a mask and formal attire. We have a very low budget (like, dollar store is good!), but want to transform my house into an old 'castle', with a color scheme of silver, gold, and jewel tone. The problem is, I have limited space in my basement, where it will maily be, and we are also using my small kitchen and (if my mom allows us) the back deck(this can fit about 5 dancing couples at a time). Any ideas? I've got some, but i need a VERY cheap way to make it look like a castle.
p.s. any ideas for cheap finger food/elegant snacks?Does anyone have any ideas for a Halloween, 1700s era masked ball? (LOW budget!)?
Go to your local deli for finger snacks get some sliced meats chz and crackers. then go to your local hobby lobby or lobby store you can find paints and styrofoam and make your castle. Here are a few ideas:
Colored light bulbs (purple, blue, or pink) may make your party space dim and mystical. You could also get pink or light purple cellophane to cover the door, objects, and possibly walls, get iridescent/silver confetti (maybe stars)or garland, iridescent table clothes.

Deviled eggs (you can make these look very fancy)
Cubed cheese and crackers
Cubed meats (like italian salami)
Fondue pot
Prosciutto wrapped melon slices (can't find prosciutto? Use any decent thin sliced and salted ham)
Cucumber sandwiches (sliced bread with crusts removed, butter or garlic herb spread with hothouse (seedless) cucumber slices) cut into triangles)
Champagne punch (or make with 7-up depending on the age of the participants)
Castle Theme:
Have you thought of paper mache? Cheap to make and paint.
Get cheap plastic swords toys at the dollar store. Make up a couple of broomstick horses and you have a 'joust' contest.
Used stuffed dragon animals for that 'maiden in distress' feel.
Make up a ';tower'; out of cardboard barrels (the kind used to pack dishware for moving) cut in half and fasten together with screws, a glue gun or duct tape. Put a rapunzel barbie doll in the top.
Just paper mashay
And add aluminum foil and then color black
Also bye flash lights from a dollar store and paint the light red and put it by the window to make it look like the window is glowing red. Just like a hounted castle
look at stumps.com (It's a prom and party supply place) It's not cheap like you're looking for but you may get some ideas there that you can translate to the dollar store

hey everyone, my sweet sixteen is this june and the theme is masquerade/masked ball. its going to be black tie and my colors are black, metallic silver, and pink. since i live really close to nyc, i decided rent a yacht which fits up to 150 guests and im pretty sure what decorations to use. the place im stuck at is what to give out as party favors. i was going to give out the feathery hand fans but obviously, i cant give that to the guyss so any ideas on what party favors to get everyone?! any help would be really really be appreciated...my budget for the whole party is up to 30,000....and please no rude comments because i do really well in school, respect and love my parents a lot, and i held up my end of the deal to earn this party so any help?! thanks in advance!Masquerade/masked ball sweet sixteen help!!!!!!!!!?
